The Problem:
When it became apparent that the quantity of sugar sprinkled
on their confections by the sugar belt system failed to provide
neither an attractive appearance nor a quality product, Davis
Cookie Company, a distributor of Archway Cookies, turned to
Eriez for a solution.

The Solution: Baking popular products for
more than four decades, the company suffered inconsistencies
as a result of a "double flip" cookie coating process.
Cookies positioned face-down on the conveyor were coated with
sugar as they approached the baking oven and then flipped
right-side-up before entering.
According to Dana Davis, company president, Eriez was asked
to develop a volumatic feeding system that could store the
sugar, as well as deliver an even coating to the top side
of the cookies on the 39-inch wide by 150-foot long baking
belt without having to flip them.
The solution was to use a special portable volumatic feeder
with a triangular-shaped storage hopper that included an adjustable
gate opening to control sugar flow. The vibratory feeder,
with it's linear motion due to the A/C operated electromagnetic
drive, provided a better-quality end-product for Davis Cookie
with an even and thorough flow of sugar onto the cookies.
To maximize their investment, Davis Cookie collaborated with
Eriez on the design of an adjustable support framework with
a crank to adjust the height of the feeder from just a fraction
of an inch above the cookies to several inches. This flexibility
allows the machine to be used at more than one location on
the belt and enables Davis to decorate special-occasion confections,
such as iced Christmas cookies that receive a sprinkle topping
after the baking and icing process.

The Result:
A quality product with less waste, consistent coverage and
substantially less product damage was the result of their
efforts. Additional volumatic feeders are being planned for
upcoming belts lines which will be coating cookies with nuts
and candy pieces.
Eriez Hi-Vi Volumatic Feeders are ideal for use in conjunction
with weigh scales, packaging and bagging equipment, small
batch operations, and operations where additive feeding is
being performed either continuously or intermittently. The
dual vibratory action assures the proper flow of dry bulk
material in a measured discharge rate. They are available
in a variety of standard sizes to handle from a few pounds
to 15 tons per hour.
