New PolyMag™ Process for Recovering Scrap Plastics |
| |
 |
Today’ designers and manufacturers are turning
to two shot injection molding, over-molding, co-extruded profiles and sequential 3-D blow molding to produce the most cost effective new designs. This results in reduced assembly costs, better part consistency and higher quality at a lower overall cost. These sophisticated moldings are more challenging to design, tool and mold. One challenge that processors face, in producing multi-material moldings, is segregating and recovering dissimilar resins. Eriez now offers a solution to this problem.
The PolyMag™ Process provides an effective and automated means to recover manufacturing scrap and waste for multi-material processors. To do this the PolyMag™ additive is incorporated
into one of the polymers prior to molding, similar to colorant, making this resin susceptible. The quantity of the magnetic additive is extremely small and does not affect the physical properties of the plastic. PolyMag™ magnetic separators may be used to sort various types and/or colors of plastics. In fact, the PolyMag™ process can be used to separate more than two components by using a different amount of magnetic additive for each.
The PolyMag™ Separator is designed to accept mixed resins, vacuum conveyed,
directly from a common granulator. The separator uses an Erium high intensity
rare earth magnetic roll (head pulley) beneath a thin Kevlar belt, to convey the plastic regrind through the magnetic field. When the regrind enters the powerful
magnetic field, the non-susceptible particles are discharged from the roll in their
natural trajectory.
The magnetically susceptible particles (containing 1% PolyMag™ Additive) are attracted to the RE roll and are discharged in the rear
hopper. A splitter arrangement is used to segregate the two particle streams. The stainless discharge hoppers are designed to accept “fast
clean out” takeoffs to automatically convey the separated plastic regrind to
vacuum receivers, with proportional valves, to blend the regrind with virgin resins.
